and it didn’t strike me as the ideal situation for a perfume

Juta, Cape Town, 1927
Original gilt decorated navy blue cloth boards. 38pp illustrated
plates, photos & plans. large 4to.

The original Groot Constantia burnt down in December 1925. This
gave the opportunity for a complete reconstruction, little more
than piecemeal work having been carried out on an ad-hoc basis as
necessary over the preceding years. Thus today we can all see the
restored building in a better state than would have been
otherwise. This text looks at the house and what was discovered of
the construction, and covers in detail the methods of repair and
restoration used to closely match the original in every way.

#27335 George McCall Theal
THE BEGINNING OF SOUTH AFRICAN HISTORY
Maskew Miller, Cape Town, 1902 1st edition.
Red cloth boards. 502pp illustrated 8vo.

Theal, in his Preface, notes: "In January 1986 I completed a small
volume which was published ... with the title of 'The Portuguese
In South Africa', and which is now out of print. The Preface to
that volume was as follows:- " ...'South Africa' meant Africa
south of the Limpopo. Mainly through the ability of one man ...
Cecil John Rhodes - that expression today means Africa south of
the Zambesi. The event which I took as an initial point - the
arrival of Van Riebeek in Table Valley in April 1652 - has thus
come to be incorrect for that purpose, the true starting point now
being the arrival of D'Anaya in Sofala in September 1505. I have
therefore written this volume, in order to rectify the beginning
of my work" ". This work is much amended and increased in scope
over the earlier one. It also contains photographic reproductions
of an ancient plan of Sofala and the Baptism Of The Monomotapa,
the latter having been taken from a picture in the Dominican
House, Rome".

bidder then it will not exceed the reserve price until another bidder
enters a higher bid. Speak to us if you are unsure on how to use this
