      Village". Now effectively a suburb of Pretoria, Irene
      was founded adjacent to the farm so named by Alois
      Hugo Nellmapius who first settled there in 1889.
      Today it still survives as a rural and private
      hamlet. An excellent collection of photographs
      reproduced here document years gone by with author's
      detailed history of the area and its colourful
      personalities of the past.

        Among other accomplishments John Brent Mills
      (1921-2009) was South Africa's ambassador to Italy
      and the Vatican. This autobiographical writing is set
      during the second World War, commencing at the fall
      Tobruk and recording further experiences in Italy
      where he became a prisoner of war, and eventually an
      escapee. Further information to be found on a web
      site devoted to him. Hard to find item as most of his
      writings were printed only in small or strictly
      limited runs. An excellent account, detailed and
      well-written.
