Damant's Horse) at Belmont, Graspan, Modder River, Magersfontein, the
Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Poplar Grove, Bloemfontein, the march
to and from Pretoria. Also chapters on Prinsloo's surrender, and also
farm burning. Very critical of the grievances of the Uitlanders as
official reasons for the war, considering them as trumped-up to provoke
the situation. Notably the book is dedicated to Lieutenant Gustavus
Coulson of the King's Own Scottish Borderers who fell at
Lambrechtfontein on May 19th 1901 bringing off a wounded man from under
enemy fire for which he received the Victoria Cross.

Ninians in Dumfriesshire, and then at Fette. Came to East Africa in
1914 after some time spent in Malaysia and the Kenya. He was later
enlisted in the Kenya African Rifles. Retired to George in South Africa
in 1947 until his death aged 98 in 1983. Interesting tales from the
lighter side of an interesting life.

Lot 222
#23189 Juliet Fredrica Bader. "UBIQUE".
Self, Durban, 1976.

Copy No.12 of 20. This copy assigned to Jack and Cecily Niven with
their name printed on the limitation page. Also an inscription to them
"With love and grateful thanks for your help and encouragement.
Juliet", plus a signed letter from Juliet to the Nivens covering the
gift of this book. Includes Faller & Bader, Read, Wrightson, and Wise
family trees. Records a 1923 trip to Petra, a 1927 trip to Siwa, Europe
in 1929, Hong Kong & Japan in 1937, and South Africa in 1936. The Niven
family lived on the farm 'Amanzi' and this is covered. The Bader family
came to South Africa to live after the war and much of the writing
throws sidelights upon those times. A last colour photograph shows
'grannie' (Juliet) surrounded by family in Chandolin, Christmas 1973,
and the book concludes with the death of her husband Ernest in 1970.
Cecily Niven was the daughter of Percy Fitzpatrick.

Lot 223
#16510 Agnes Rissik. LETTERS TO MY GRANDCHILDREN.

Copy No.321 of 350. Covers such diverse historical episodes as the
exhumation of Napoleon's body & the siege of Kimberley, while imparting
family information for Duncan, Alexander, Rissik, Altmann, & Leibbrandt
families. The Rissik connection was Johann Rissik who was appointed by
Louis Botha as the first Administrator of the Transvaal following Union
in 1910. Interesting notes on the naming of Johannesburg. Regrettably
this item does not include the separate booklet with family trees.
