John Murray. London 1906 1st edition.

"Containing Hitherto Unpublished Information". A contemporary and 
hagiographic biography of this controversial figure. Revered in his 
day, modern sentiment is critical of his aims and role in provoking 
the Boer War to gain control over the Transvaal Republic using the 
Uitlander issue.

Colonel Stratford St Leger served with Colonel Alderson's Mounted 
Infantry, and the 66 full-page illustrations alone are 66 reasons to 
own
this book. The majority feature horses, and many of the sketches were
published in the 'Black & White' weekly. His text deals with events 
from
the siege and relief of Kimberley, Sanna's Post, Klipriversberg. A 
chapter
relates 'Life on commando' as related to the author by an anonymous
burgher.

A biography of one of South Africa's most able generals in the Boer 
War. As premier of the Transvaal and later of the Union of South 
Africa he was a controversial character and made many enemies through 
his
support for Britain in 1914 which resulted in the Maritz, or 
Afrikaner,
rebellion.
