thanks todd, that did it, just one thing though, the default page still says 'welcome to <myinternalserverip>, looking at the index.shtml file - i'm not an html coder - i see: <CENTER><H1>Welcome to <!--#echo var="SERVER_NAME" -->!</H1> <b>Running version <!--#echo var="SERVER_SOFTWARE" -->.</b> </CENTER>
it's clear that the server ip is referenced by "SERVER_NAME" but is it a different configuration setting to the ones in (common)httpd.conf ? of course i can replace that particular file but i wonder if the internal ip is still available to browser requests? i had hoped to get apache to report a fakename/ip without breaking it, opening my machine to friends will also put me on the radar of less savoury types! bascule On Monday 23 September 2002 9:39 am, you wrote: > bascule wrote on Mon, Sep 23, 2002 at 02:06:52AM +0100 : > > i altered the ServerName in /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf because the local > > machine name appears all over the place and i'd like to hide it, but when > > i put: > > ServerName localhost > > There is a default option: > UseCanonicalName On > > Set it to: > UseCanonicalName Off > > Blue skies... Todd -- 'I'll tell you this!' shouted Rincewind. 'I'd rather trust me than history! Oh, shit, did I just say that?' (Interesting Times)
