thanks todd, that did it, 
just one thing though, the default page still says 'welcome to 
<myinternalserverip>,
looking at the index.shtml file - i'm not an html coder - i see:
<CENTER><H1>Welcome to
<!--#echo var="SERVER_NAME" -->!</H1>
<b>Running version
<!--#echo var="SERVER_SOFTWARE" -->.</b>
</CENTER>

it's clear that the server ip is referenced by "SERVER_NAME" but is it a 
different configuration setting to the ones in (common)httpd.conf ?
of course i can replace that particular file but i wonder if the internal ip
is still available to browser requests?
i had hoped to get apache to report a fakename/ip without breaking it, 
opening my machine to friends will also put me on the radar of less savoury 
types!
