Can you ssh or telnet into your system from another PC? Chances are,
it's not the whole system that is locked, but only X, which of course
will prevent you from using either your keyboard or mouse and so it
appears totally locked up. If you can ssh into your system from outside,
you should be able to kill X and then restart it without any loss of
data.
