In the panic it may have slipped my mind, but I believe defrag may
have started up automatically while I was within windows. I thought it
was disabled, but upon return from a short absence, I found defrag
merrily humming away. I stopped it it straight away, but it seems likely
now that this was the cause of the corruption, as this would be the
first time it had run since I installed Linux.
I think your strategy is best. Avoid windows like the plague it is.
