I'm not sure what mechanism KDE uses to set the background image.
But if you want to convert a .jpg to .pm, just use *convert* (provided
you have ImageMagic installed).

The syntax is

command - from file - to file

So to convert from .jpg to .pm

convert afile.jpg afile.pm

For more specific information, "man convert"

If man convert comes up empty, check to be sure you have ImageMagic
installed.
