Dear friends:

Just downloaded and installed LM 8.1 (clean, fresh install).

I have so far had only one problem that mystifies me: sound.

I had no problem whatsoever having LM 8.1 detect and configure my new SB16
ISA card. I was able to hear both Linus' voice and the midi sample just
like always. When I installed and configured RealPlayer 8, I heard the usual
Welcome greeting. But, for some reason, ever since when I try to play
RealPlayer I get an error message saying that "some other application might
be using my sound card". Well, I went into KDE's Control Center and turned
off all sound to avoid conflict. Still, no sound. So I went back to
"sndconfig" (which I always do in the console, NOT in KDE), and tried to
reconfigure my sound card. I get an error message every time that says:
"cannot find /dev/audio". Totally mystified.

By the way, what is /dev/shm, please. Have never seen it before:

Here it is under df:

[sher@Mindspring sher]$ df
Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda3 3606476 1194228 2412248 34% /
/dev/hda1 72252 34796 37456 49% /boot
none 256688 0 256688 0% /dev/shm
[sher@Mindspring sher]$

Thanks so much.

Benjamin
