Sorry to butt into this thread, but I had problems with the output quality from my Canon S450 using cups - foomatic, et al. I tried Turboprint and the quality is simply amazing. Perhaps you might try their free driver - your printer is supported. To the best of my recollection, it uses the cups driver interface, among others. You might luck-in and get your printer to work.
