Jose,
I appreciate your assistance... Thanks for taking the
time to dialog with me regarding this issue...
The data I gave, though, was for IPX related data... See
the following example output from ifconfig:
1002=# ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:60:08:1C:61:A1
inet addr:192.168.128.5 Bcast:192.168.128.255

In particular, note the IPX data. You will see that
indeed I was referring to IPX specific data and not
TCP/IP paramenters. I perhaps should have included this
whole output instead of just using the addr: portion.
The IPX address consists of a network address and a node
address that is the same as the MAC address of the
network interface.
When the system probes the network, it should be able to
autodetect the network number and then tack on the node
portion to this. It is my initial experience, however,
that ifconfig does not display the network adress (on my
system) when the interfaces are in autoconfigured.
Ifconfig only shows the network address when I manually
create the interfaces.
Also, you seem to forget that I have never been able to
get slist to show me any information other than an error
message.
I have one Novell server (486DX66, 20MB RAM, VESA local
bus). For all practical purposes, it is only functioning
as a print server. My printer is in a different physical
location than the system that is running Mandrake 8.0 and
Windows 98.
I do not use Samba, because my system has been set up
this way for years... I had Novell before Linux was as
popular as it is now, and because I used Novell in
connection with my work.
Secondly, I have avoided using Samba because I would have
to reconfigure the Novell system hardware to make it
possible to load FreeBSD or Linux on it. The SCSI
controller in the Novell box is not supported under Linux
or FreeBSD. I have recently acquired a VESA local bus
Adaptec 29xx SCSI card, but I hate to go to the effort of
reconfiguring the box if this Novell issue is simply an
OS configuration hassle.
It is hard to justify an upgrade to hardware when this is
simply an overblown print server... If I did that, I
might as well just buy a standalone print server.
The fact remains that my network is largely one used for
keeping in touch with various OS's so that I can be
somewhat versed in a variety of computing environments.
If I am to subscribe wholly to the concept of using
Linux, I would like to have knowledge about how to
configure it for use in a variety of connectivity
environments.
