I had the same font problem.  Turning on anti-aliasing
made a big improvement for me.  Of course, you can
only do this in KDE so far.

To turn on anti-aliasing enter the K Configurator and
select Look and Feel.  Then select Style.  Around the
middle of the page is checkbox for anti-aliasing. 
Enable that and restart X.  You should notice a
significant improvement in Konqueror and KDE in
general will look nicer.

I haven't had success with Netscape yet, but I
understand there is a HOWTO now for cleaning up fonts.
 I haven't had a chance to try it, though.  It can be
