I have the EXACT same problem.  It occurs in several web browsers, as well
as star office.  The fonts sorta look like a ransom letter; the bottoms
aren't flat, and the verticle lines ofen have parts that are "fat".

i am also running a nvidia card (tnt2).... wonder if that's related?

please post any solutions you find.... i haven't been able to figure
anything out....
