Unless the machines are "seeing" each other, the LEDs are only an indication of
ARPing (broadcast packets) which must complete before any ping packets are
sent.  What does "arp -a" give on each...?

If each machine does not contain the MAC address of the other, you will need to
resort to one of ethereal, tcpdump, Spy, etc to see if the ARP packets are
arriving.
