I just picked up one of these little beasties and am making some
progress with getting Mandrake 7.1 installed on it. I'm just wondering
if anyone else has tried Linux on one of these laptops. I've got a few
issues with it that maybe someone can help me resolve...

First, the specs:

IBM Thinkpad 1161-210 (called i1210)
32MB RAM
6GB HDD
24x CD-ROM (LG CD-ROM CRN-8241B)
Silicon Motion LynxEM+ graphics card
Lucent Technologies SoftModem AMR
IBM ThinkPad LCD 800x600 display
IBM PS/2 Trackpoint
Crystal WDM Audio Codec

and I threw in a Linksys PCMCIA 10MB ethernet card

The install was extremely slow... took about 1.5 hours just for the
install (first CD only). I did try it once with the extension and
application CDs, and I think the installer locked the CD-ROM... I
couldn't eject the CD to switch it, so I had to start the install again
(it was quoting 3hrs for the install with the four CDs).

After I got the install to complete, X didn't work. I had to upgrade
to XFree86 4.0.1 from cooker in order for it to work (so X does work
completely now). I found a page that may help with the modem (it's an
(ack) onboard winmodem), so I'm not too worried about that. My main
concern right now is the sound...

Does anyone know what card I should be selecting for this? Sounddrake
doesn't detect it. When I try to manually insmod some of the alsa
drivers, I'm getting a bunch of unresolved symbols.

Has anyone gotten Mandrake (or any type of Linux) to work on this
particular laptop before?
