No sure-fire ideas, but it may be that the default SMP kernel lacks some
things your machine needs. Try compiling your own SMP kernel and see what
happens. Be sure to keep the old kernel around and referenced in lilo.conf
so you can boot back to that if the new one fails. Bit myself with that one
a few times...
