What version of XF86 are you running? I encountered the same problem with
4.0.1 but 4.0 has been no problem. Also check to see if there is a lock
file on your font server (try starting xfs manually -->
/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs start) might be xfsd .... it might tell you there is a
lock file ... if there is try removing the lock and then starting the
fontserver again. Did it fail on bootup? You can also run xfs status which
should tell you if your font server is running.

Hi,I encountered that very aggravating problem twice during various installs - the way I "fixed" this was to make sure and format the partitions I was setting up. This was when doing a clean install and I didn't need to save any data that was already there. Don't know why the formatting would have done anything, but it got me past that point. I hope there is a better solution out there !
