Sorry for the delay, I was a bit too busy to test this properly, but it works 
like a charm! Thanks a lot!
I do like to know the other option to solve this problem and also to know why 
this works, as the documentation on the options for submission mode are rather 
sparse and I could not find what this actually does except forcing exim to 
accept $authenticated_id to be the complete address. Is this because most MUA's 
do not set the From: header properly? From debugging the conversation between 
Thunderbird and exim it does look like Thunderbird uses the proper From:
