Hey all, I'm a web developer who's exporting grids of data from webpages into Excel and I'm trying to look under the hood to get some answers. My question: sometimes when I export a grid some of the cells in a numeric column will be "Number" and some will be "General." All the cells seemingly contain nothing but numeric data. By what rationale does Excel decide what cells should be General and which should be Number?
On a related note, I experimented with exporting a currency field. While ALL of the cells had a dollar sign in front of their amounts, only half were "Currency" and the rest were "General" format. Those that were Currency did not display a dollar sign in the formula bar (though they DID display it in the cell itself). Those that were General displayed a dollar sign in the formula bar and in the cell itself. I'm just looking for some detailed info as to how Excel makes these decisions. If it matters, I'm using Office 2003.
