Looks like it may have fixed its self
The last start up wanted permission to use maildie instaed of mbox
format
the offending directory in cache is now
richard@richard-Inspiron-3580:~/.cache/evolution/mail$ ls
83febb968dd172d285752d793ebe81d81ef79a59 trash
