RE advice on re-installing
thank you
I have done full fresh installations of Ubuntu before (reformatting hard drive) to successfully fix a problem, because, onerous as it is, it is actually quicker than learning how to deal with every linux /Ubuntu quirk.
RE advise to use gsettings reset.
Did that and the problem remains.
Used the gsetting get commands, and they returned window width=910 and height=717.
thank you very much for the suggestions.

Re-installing Ubuntu 18.04 will not be useful, just like re-installing Evolution was not useful. You should try to move beyond this mindset where re-installing software will fix it; that virtually never works on GNU/Linux (or an other system with reasonably-written software). Please take a look at this message from last July and see if the steps provided solve your problem (running the gsettings reset-recursively command): https://mail.gnome.org/archives/evolution-list/2018-July/msg00006.html It seems that somehow one of your default evolution shell settings has gotten so large that it can't be used.
