Independently running individual components of evolution was demonstrated at GUADEC, but in terms of "we've got the appearance of a split, but they're not really independent applications yet". Philip then pointed out that smaller independent projects would be easier to comprehend and contribute to, thus addressing Novell's primary problem of not being able to devote resources to Evolution. Not sure if it's gone any further than that.
