*For the last few days I've only been lightly skimming this thread looking
to see if anybody has said something new that I or a bunch of other people
on this list have not said a dozen times before, but I saw my name
mentioned so this is what Clark thinks: if simultaneity was absolute, that
is to say if everybody agreed about what was simultaneous and what was not
then the car/garage "paradox" would deserve it's name, but they do not,
therefore it should really be called the "car/garage odd situation". The
fundamental way a paradox is avoided is by throwing an extra minus side
into Euclids formula for finding the hypotenuse of a right triangle and
using that metric to calculate distance thus s2= c^2t^2-x^2 (or s^2= -
c^2t^2+x^2, it makes no difference which you use as long as you're
consistent) where s is the distance in spacetime, t is the amout of time ,
x is the distance in space, and c is the speed of light. So if event X and
event Y are at an equal distance in spacetime for me then they are both on
the same hyperbolic structure.*

*It is necessary that the space component and the time component have
opposite signs because if we used Euclids original formulation all
observers would NOT agree that two events are always the same distance
apart in spacetime, and you could even disrupt causality by have some
observers see you winning the lottery before you bought a ticket. *
