To be fair, I have mostly paid closer to $3 a gallon. USPS may get a better deal as they don't buy retail.
But, let's see how that looks. At $3 a gallon and 9mpg the 200,000mile fuel cost is $66,666 Not sure the fuel equivalent cost of the USPS candidate EVs, but lets use the 42mpg I can get from my Honda Fit. At $3 a gallon the Fit at 42mpg the 200,000mile fuel cost is $14286. A savings of $52,380. That might buy you an EV box truck, but not much more. To be fair the USPS has to change over all sorts of stuff to go EV. Charging gear and distribution wiring. Tools and training for maintenance. Time was, some years ago, there was union resistance that put the KiBash on USPS conversion to EV. Even if that goes through there will be collateral costs. I think maybe the conversion cost is still prohibitive without attributing the null choice to politics.
