That's true, but all things are *not* equal. Fatality rates are a function not only of vehicle weight; but also construction, driver age, gender, skill level, the speed being driven, and more.

An 2020 IIHS report on actual fatality rates found that on average, heavier vehicles were safer. But the 20 safest vehicles included the VW Golf, Nissan Leaf, and Mitsubishi Outlander; all relatively small cars.

And the 20 vehicles with the highest fatality rates included the popular large pickups (Dodge RAM etc.)

The segment with the lowest fatality rates are neither the smallest nor the largest vehicles; they are mid-size sedans (like the Tesla) and (surprisingly) minivans.
