The OpenEVSE only uses 3 wires so it would be simple to cut off the
NEMA 14-50 and replace the plug. On my OpenEVSEs I cut off the 4th
unused prong so that if I travel somewhere I can plug directly into a
NEMA 14-30 outlet as well.

FWIW, I had the contactor weld closed in my first OpenEVSE after 6
years of service. I was able to file the contacts and it is running
fine right now. I did order a replacement contactor I need to install.
The second one I bought a year later had not had any issues. The unit
properly notified me of the issue and refused to allow any charging so
the safety features seem to work.
