EVs have effectively replaced Diesel cars in Europe already. At one time, mid-2000s I think, Diesels made up close to half of EU new car sales. But as the EU developed more stringent emissions regulations, it got more and more expensive to make them compliant. Then the VW scandal - and other less well publicized ones involving other manufacturers - pretty well sealed the Diesel coffin. EU Diesel sales have tanked as EV sales have risen, and good riddance.
