Yeah, for all their earlier talk about how they wanted to save the world
with EVs, these days Tesla act like traditional corporate capitalists - if
you're leading the market, it means that your price is too low. Time to
raise it.

VW currently doesn't have a single EV model that can surpass the Tesla 3 for
EU sales.

However, if you add up 2021 EU sales for all the BEV models for both brands,
and include VW's Skoda and Seat divisions, you get:

VW - 230,276
Tesla - 167,549

This year, the Y is starting to catch on better for Tesla there. The X and
S are still not selling in significant numbers, and I doubt that that will
change.

Tesla doesn't have the range of buyer-needs appeal that Volkswagen has.
Tesla 3 and Y are large cars by EU standards (D-segment). They're roughly
analagous to the VW ID5 and ID4 respectively.

Tesla offers nothing comparable to VW's ID3 or E-Up. The Tesla 3 is almost a
foot and a half longer than an ID3, and nearly FOUR FEET longer than an E-
Up.

Have you ever seen the size of European parking spaces and garages? :-)

VW is working on an ID1 to replace the E-Up, and an ID2 which is Polo size.
I doubt very much that we'll ever see those in the US.

What we might see here is the VW ID8. It's about the same size as the Tesla
X, and has roughly the same range, but (my estimate) will probably be priced
about 25% lower.

So by - again guessing - 2024 VW will have a full range of EVs on offer in
Europe.

It will be interesting to see how Tesla responds.

I think the big news here is that Volkswagen is genuinely serious about EVs,
at least in Europe. Even 5 years ago, I would not have predicted that.

Work-arounds to Linux systemd problems are so widely in use that
when systemd developers try to fix the problems, they break Linux
systems by breaking the work-arounds. Some systemd bugs are being
used as features by enough distros and users that fixing bugs can
cause widespread breakage. Systemd can't be fixed.
