We considered different battery sizes and opted for a 35 kWh battery.
Thus we ensure a range of 255 km after WLTP at maximum charging
capacity, which is generously estimated for average everyday use.
The Sion is a nice looking car, with some intriguing features, though the
website seems to be lacking some critical information about it.
Sion seem to be counting on rational attitudes toward range. I hope they're
right, but I'm not so sure that thinking is as prominent as they and I might
hope, even in the EU. In fact the EU EV trend is toward ever larger
batteries. Range competition is heating up.
That's true even in the low-middle ranges as defined by price. To give a
couple of examples, the Renault Zoe (52kWh) is WLTP 395km at 31k euro, and
the Peugeot E208 (50kWh) delivers WLTP 340km at a little under 30k euro.
(Prices are before subsidies.)
The Sion is aiming for 25.5k euro. They may have something there,
especially after subsidies, which in many places will put the price under
20k euros.
But I think they would be wise to look more closely at the competition. If
one is willing to lease the battery, a Zoe can be had for 24k euros,
probably around 22k with dealer discounts. Again - not counting subsidies.
So, 6 to 14 percent less out of pocket and 55% more range. .
Or, Zoe battery included, pay 12-22% more and get 55% more range. .
There's also some buyer confidence in a longer-lived manufacturer as opposed
to a startup. I don't know how you quantify that.
Other than the so-so range, the Sion looks like a nice useful EV. Hard to
say for sure how useful, as I didn't see any specs or dimensions on the
website. I wonder why they omitted them.
The PV is an intriguing feature, even if it doesn't really add that much to
the range, and the integration is impressive. I shudder to think about body
repair costs or the consequent insurance rates, though. Yikes.
I also wonder why they bothered with PV on the doors. Or is that just on
the prototype on their home page?
In any case, I wish them the best with it.
