I was curious about the recently announced Sion and inquired about a
larger battery. I did realize the car won't initially be available in
the US market but I wanted to ask anyway. Also, you may recall, this car
is covered with solar panels, giving it some ability to charge all day
long. Even though they don't anticipate a near future sale to me, they
were very kind to reply promptly and I thought others might be
interested in reading. First my question, then their response.

Hi
I just learned about the upcoming sion. It is a car that could fit my
needs. One particular need is to use the car to accessing hiking and
other wilderness activities. This requires a reasonably high ground
clearance which the sion marginally meets - but is better than pretty
much all the other EVs currently on the market. The other requirement is
range; there are no charging stations in the wilderness and I need about
200 miles range after accounting for cool weather and other non ideal
conditions. The current model can't do that. Do you anticipate having a
higher capacity battery soon ?
Thanks,
Peri Hartman

Dear Peri,
Thank you very much for your email and your interest in our Sion. I am
very happy to read that you have come to known about our vehicle and are
curious to know more about it.
For the time being, we are concentrating our sales structures on the
European market. Therefore we are not yet looking into exporting the
Sion outside of Europe. This is why you cannot currently reserve a Sion
via our website. As soon as we are planning to enter your market we
will, of course, let you know and will be very happy for you to make a
reservation then. Nevertheless, the Sion is produced after EU
regulations which are also accepted in many countries outside of the EU.
The homologation in the US might therefore be no problem.
Together with our partner ElringKlinger, we have developed a
water-cooled lithium-ion battery specifically for the Sion. This ensures
that it is perfectly designed for our concept with viSono [solar
charging] and biSono [bidirectional charging].
We considered different battery sizes and opted for a 35 kWh battery.
Thus we ensure a range of 255 km after WLTP at maximum charging
capacity, which is generously estimated for average everyday use. A
battery with a larger capacity would increase the consumption of the
Sion, require more production resources and increase the price. For the
time being, we do not plan to offer a battery with a higher capacity. As
this might change in the future, I recommend you subscribe to our
newsletter <https://sonomotors.com/newsletter.html/> where we regularly
publish our latest news and development milestones.
For more detailed information about our Sion you might be interested as
well in our information sheet

Please don’t hesitate to get back to me with any remaining questions.
With kind regards from Munich
