A new electric vehicle charging station will let drivers juice up their cars while they wait for friends to land at Sacramento International Airport. The Sacramento Municipal Utility District officially opened the charging station on Wednesday in the airport’s waiting area. The airport also has charging stations in its garage and daily parking lot. The $200,000 fast-charging station is the third one SMUD has opened since 2014. It can charge 80 percent of a battery for most domestic- and foreign-made electric vehicles within 30 minutes. SMUD’s other charging stations are at the utility’s headquarters on the 6200 block of S Street and in Citrus Heights at 7825 Lichen Drive. SMUD plans to open two more this year at the Sacramento Amtrak station at 401 I St. and at the site of the new Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op at 28th and R streets.
