The article is promoting a battery charger that attempts to measures lead
battery capacity and (he says) then suggests how the battery might still be
used. It's actually an advertisement for the Jameco kit based on his idea.

The link to the jameco page worked, but there's not much there on what he's really doing. The link to https://www.patreon.com/batteryguy?ty=h just shows me a blank page (and appears to be asking for money).

2. "Batteries don't last nearly as long in tropical environments...."

There used to be "tropical" versions of lead-acid batteries to deal with hot climates where you never had to worry about freezing. I don't know if this is still done, or not.

I think the specific gravity of the electrolyte was adjusted, and they lowered (i.e. temperature compensated) the chargers to a slightly lower voltage. There may have been other adjustments in the design of the battery.

That said, it's a truism that lead-acid batteries generally don't die of old age -- they get murdered by neglect and abuse.

Ignorance also plays a part. Lots of batteries discarded as being "bad" simply need water, or equalizing, or a few charge/discharge cycles to restore operation. It is common for people (and con artists) to rediscover "miracle cures" that only amount to cleaning, refilling, and properly charging a battery.

The classic is to run down a battery until it won't crank an engine. Then apply your magic cure (which does nothing at all), but also WAIT 10-15 minutes while you talk about your wonderful invention. Then turn the key, and the engine starts! The battery will recover all by itself, so you have a couple seconds of power -- that's enough to start the engine and "prove" that your moose milk cure works!

Life is basically simple. You try things. Some things work, but most
fail. Do more of what works. If it works big, others quickly copy it.
Then you do something else. The trick is the doing something else.
