Sitting there listening to the speakers going on about their business
as if Tesla doesn´t exist had me wondering if history is going to
repeat itself with a twist.

I don't even see a twist. It's almost exactly the same as when Detroit
ignored all the subcompacts sneaking up on them from Japan, until the 1973-4
fuel shortage kicked it, and all they had were Pintos and Vegas.

History may not repeat itself exactly; but it echoes.

The automakers live in their own little bubble. They only talk to each other, about each other. Anything outside their bubble (like Tesla and EVs) doesn't exist. "Elephant in the room?" The blind men don't misjudge the elephant -- they don't even SEE it!

This is an even more intriguing view. Remember how all the "experts"
dismissed the Iphone? It was a radical departure from Blackberries and the
other mobile phones that "everyone wanted." It didn't have a physical
keyboard, it was too big, it was too different. Who would want something
like that? And then people were standing in line to pay big prices for
those mobile phones that "nobody wanted."

Marketing has always been poor at detecting paradigm shifts. People only imagine the future in terms of minor variations in what they already have. Henry Ford once remarked, "If I had asked customers, they would have said they want a better horse."

EVs are a paradigm shift. Done right, they are NOTHING like conventional cars. They will change people's attitude about what a car is.

For example... we bought a Nissan Leaf. My wife's been driving it as her daily driver. This weekend, she went out with a friend. She asked, "what's wrong with your car? It's so noisy and jerky?" Of course, there was nothing wrong with it... she's just gotten used to her EV!
