At the inauguration ceremony, Economics Minister John Deng said the use of electric vehicles in Kinmen, in line with the international trend of carbon reduction, will help draw more tourists to the offshore county and boost the development of Taiwan's electric vehicle industry. In Kinmen, one of Taiwan's main tourism areas, some tour agencies have also applied to use electric buses, Deng said, promising full support by his ministry for their efforts. Deng said he hopes Kinmen's initiative to adopt the use of electric vehicles would become a model for other counties and cities in Taiwan. Kinmen Magistrate Chen Fu-hai said the use of electric buses, electric cars and electric scooters has turned Kinmen into a healthy, low-carbon island. He expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), Environmental Protection Administration and National Development Council for their support of the initiative. The use of 12 electric buses in Kinmen translates into one per 5,600 people, given its population of 68,000, according to the MOEA's Industrial Development Bureau. On average, there is one bus for every 12 square kilometers on the 150 sq km island, the bureau said, adding that the data shows Kinmen is a model for low-carbon transportation.
