So Lococo invited a reporter who had never driven anything powered by electricity bigger than a golf cart to take a spin in his 2012 Nissan Leaf. The quiet in an electric vehicle is staggering. In a welcome way. There is no vibration — not in the steering wheel, not in the seat, not through the floorboard. There is no odor, no “clunk” as the car is shifted into gear. It has all the amenities of a gasoline-powered car, from air conditioning to power windows and electronic dash display. With a very low center of gravity — the batteries are down below — it handles corners tremendously. There is no delay whatsoever between pressing the accelerator and the forward motion of the car. I went from 0 to 30 miles per hour in 3 seconds. It’s no two-seater Smart car. The Leaf looks to seat four comfortably, five if necessary, and didn’t appear to put occupants at any more risk than a standard car in an accident. On a side street near Lococo’s home in the Sunset Cove neighborhood of Winter Haven, I came to a halt as a lone egret ambled into the roadway, oblivious to the Leaf’s silent approach. “The butts-in-seats experience is eye-opening,” Lococo said.
