- Electric rival to Merc CLS, Tesla
- Four-door body, battery power
- 300-mile range, four-wheel drive

Porsche is busy preparing a battery-powered rival to the successful
all-electric Tesla Model S - and CAR has details of this project,
provisionally badged the Porsche 717.

It’s being developed on the Volkswagen group’s latest MSB architecture under
development for the Panamera Mk2 and the next Bentley Continental.

If all goes according to plan, we can expect a sporty four-door, four-seater
with clear 911 overtones, wrapped in a more compact footprint than a
Panamera’s. Our artist’s impression above shows the kind of direction being
explored by Porsche’s design department, according to our sources. Sounds
like the 911 cookie cutter hasn’t run out yet…

Porsche 717: a Tesla fighter from Stuttgart
The sports car brand already offers two plug-in hybrid electric vehicles
(PHEVs): one based on the facelifted Cayenne SUV and the other one on the
Panamera. On an even loftier level, there is of course the now-sold-out
limited-edition 918 hypercar. The logical next step therefore is a Porsche
battery-electric vehicle, or BEV.

Now that the company is part of VW, it is no longer able to go and develop
such new projects solo, so the power of the group is being flexed to make
the Porsche 717 leap from feasibility study to factory floor.

Ground hugging and emphatically dynamic in appearance, the car that is
rumoured to be badged 717 is definitely not an SUV or a crossover, CAR
hears.

The battery tech underpinning the electric Porsche
While the flat-bottom Tesla features a long and wide monolithic battery pack
which double-up as floorpan and structural reinforcement, the lower H-point
and the sports car stance postulated by Porsche would call for a so-called
topologic battery installation.

Instead of a single, square-mattress-shaped energy cell which is relatively
easy to cool and to connect, the battery arrangement proposed for the 717
looks more like a mountain range with the centre tunnel acting as peak
ridge, with a pair of tall bulkhead walls and smaller agglomerations in the
sills, the footwell and the overhangs.

In total, a reported 108 battery pouches need to be accommodated by the
body-in-white. All 717 models will feature 4wd, four-wheel torque vectoring
and four-wheel steering. As a rule, there is one electric motor per axle
which will either be steel-sprung or feature an electrically-controlled air
suspension system.

When is the Porsche 717 going to be on sale?
It is hard to judge whether Porsche’s provisional launch date of early 2019
is realistic or wishful thinking. The same applies to the engineering
concept which, according to one insider, is set to provide three different
e-power stages rated at 400, 500 and 600bhp, reflecting the choice of power
outputs available in the Model S. The average driving range target is in
excess of 300 miles.

Together with the US specialist supplier Quantumspace, Porsche and sister
brands VW and Audi are developing a new induction charge process designed to
match the Tesla principle in duration and to beat it in convenience.

Will Porsche’s New EV Affect Tesla Motors Inc’s Prospects?

Tesla Motors Inc which has been facing competition from various players in
the industry, is now expected to be challenged by Porsche as well. According
to CarMagazine, German luxury carmaker Porsche is planning to come up with a
four-door, all-wheel drive (AWD) electric vehicle (EV) that is most likely
to hit markets in 2019.

The vehicle, which was previously rumored to have been named “Pajun”, was
announced to have a similar electric drivetrain used in its older version,
Panamera. CarMagazine further revealed that the provisional name of the
expected EV will be “Porsche 717”.

The publication indicates that the model will be developed under Volkswagen
AG’s modular standard platform (MSB) architecture, which is currently under
development for the upcoming Bentley Continental and Panamera Mk2.

It is expected that Porsche will make a premium EV that will give a tough
time to Tesla. Porsche 717 will have an electric drive range north of 300
miles.

Porsche already has experience in manufacturing plug-in hybrid electric
vehicles (PHEVs) like Cayenne SUV, Panamera, and the elegant 918 Spyder
Hypercar. Recent news indicates that Porsche 717 will be the first
all-electric vehicle by the automaker, and that it is unlikely to be a
crossover or an SUV.

Battery Type
The publication further reveals that battery packs used in the Porsche EV
will be different from the ones used in Tesla’s electric cars. Tesla uses a
single square-shaped honey comb-like energy cell installed on the floor of
its vehicles. Such battery packs cost less, store more energy, and can
easily be cooled off.

However, Porsche 717 will use battery packs that will resemble the shape of
a mountain range; they will have a topological platform with the center
tunnel rising as the highest peak. Around 108 battery pouches will be
installed in the German EV.

Tesla Still In The Game
According to a few sources of CarMagazine, 717 will be available in three
power ranges with 400, 500, and 600 break horsepower (BHP), and with an
average drive range of 300 miles. These quality features are set to give a
tough time to Tesla’s Model S and upcoming Model X, which currently have
electric drive range of 265 miles and 235 miles, respectively.

Bidness Etc predicts that Porsche 717 will definitely pose a threat to
Tesla’s future plans for the European market. However, the competition will
be restricted to the luxury cars segment. Sensing the rising competition in
the auto market, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been planning to target the mass
market by releasing a cheaper EV, Model 3, which is expected to roll out in
2017.

Tesla has stated that it will be difficult for rivals to compete with it
once the Nevada-based GigaFactory is completed in 2017, and after the
automaker accomplishes plans to start rolling out half a million EVs
annually by 2020.

The Porsche 717 Reported To Be Developed on The New Panamera MK2

Report: New AWD, Electric Supercar Sedan From Porsche Arrives By 2019
]

Porsche has long been reported as working on a project to take the plug-in
world by storm. But how does a plug-in AWD sedan with up to 600 hp and more
than 300 miles of range sound?

It sounds a lot like the Tesla Model S to us.

CAR reports that Volkswagen work on the MSB architecture, which is currently
under development for the Panamera Mk2, currently also includes the Porsche
717 (provisionally names), an all-electric supercar sedan.

CAR offers some specific details on the unconventional battery configuration
found inside the car.

“Instead of a single, square-mattress-shaped energy cell which is
relatively easy to cool and to connect, the battery arrangement proposed for
the 717 looks more like a mountain range with the centre tunnel acting as
peak ridge, with a pair of tall bulkhead walls and smaller agglomerations in
the sills, the footwell and the overhangs.

According to “insiders” familiar with the project, the 717 will have three
levels of “e-power stages”
    400hp
    500hp
    600hp

The Porsche lineup already features three plug-in vehicles in production
today, the Panamera S e-Hybrid, the Cayenne S e-Hybrid and supercar 918 – so
the company’s EV cred is well established.

The 717 is said to take design clues from the 911, but will be more compact
than today’s Panamera, and will also feature a new inductive charge system.
The pure electric Porsche reportedly has a provisional release date of
“early” 2019.

Legacy car companies crack me up. They still won’t respond with a
Tesla-fighter until they actually see Teslas selling in numbers that
threaten them.

This “news” is just more “we got a couple guys out back working on a
Tesla-beater!”, garbage. Porsche? I’ll believe it when I see it. The car
described in this fantasy tale sounds like $200,000+ limited-production
nonsense. Plus, all the “might have”; “could do as much as-” jargon.

2019 and Tesla should have enough Model IIIs and X’s out the door to be
working on a full-sized pickup truck and very close to 2nd gen Roadster. At
this rate Porsche is indicating, their big deal may make them look like
Johnny-Come-Latelys. Heck, Model S v.2 should be on the road by then ...
