In particular, this car doesn't seem to be so rare as to be thought of as me winning the lottery, but rather as having a nice windfall if I wanted to do the flip thing. It's not valuable enough for me to think of making an huge profit off of; rather, it's something that I can think of as a way for me to actually have a car worth much more than I'd be willing to spend on a car. (As it is, I'm already looking to spend a fair bit more than I otherwise would, but it should be worth it in this case for the fun.) It's in decent enough shape, but nowhere near show quality. It's not going to be original to get it to show quality, so it's just a matter of whatever I do to the car mimicking original specs or not. Maybe collectors would be fooled by that sort of thing, but I can't see how they could be. I don't see this being fiscally responsible for the fuel savings. I don't drive enough for any car to meet that standard, even though I won't pay a dime for the electricity (because my already-paid-for PV panels have enough surplus to charge a car). So...all in all, I see this as a way to have a rich man's toy that I wouldn't otherwise have. That writ, I'm still planning on "doing right" by the car. The only inauthentic mods I'd do that wouldn't be easily reversible would be the expansion of the tunnel and changing the decorative rear air intakes into functional ones for the controller(s). The engine needs some top end work, and I'll probably take the opportunity to do era-appropriate performance upgrades as part of a complete overhaul...but isn't this the exact car that was a favorite for those sorts of modifications when it was still new? The transmission I'll swap, but do people really get excited about having a Mustang with a high-revving automatic transmission that limits the car's performance and sucks gas? And, yeah -- I do like the car. I've wanted one since I got a ride in one when I was in college, but never really thought I'd actually have one. I've also wanted an EV for a long time -- which is why all the extra solar panels on the roof. Part of that's not spending money on gas, but part of it's also the peace of mind of knowing that I'll still be able to drive around town even if, for whatever reason, gas is hard to come by -- say, if my finances were to dry up, or another '70s-style oil price shock sends gas to $10 / gallon. I see this project as a way to have my cake and eat it, too. Sure, I'm gonna saddle myself with the worst of both worlds...but I'll also get the best of both worlds, too.
