Have inquired if banding was required several times  with CALB cells. 
 
I have been told by CALB it is not required. 
 
So at least from one Manufacturer this has been addressed. 
 
Also the manual that comes with a full box says nothing about banding. 
 
If you destroy the cell yes they will swell. However banding is not going  
to kept an abused CALB cell from being damaged.

The manufacturer  instructs you to band the cells. They even sell 
plates and parts  specifically for doing so.
I suspect that if it were not necessary, they  would not instruct you to do 
so.
