I wish we had more definitive data on this issue. Some have problems if they don't band them and others do not have problems. I haven't seen enough data with enough detail to make a determination either way. If you don't over charger or over discharge the limited data I've seen, mostly anecdotal, shows that they will not swell.
While the chemistry is a little different, there is very little, if any, pressure put on the cells I've seen in things like cell phones, some laptop batteries like Mac Books, and the like. I have only seen those cells swell when they were either over charged or over discharged. With one out of 10 swollen cells I took out of "dead" Macbook batteries I was able to successfully compress it back into shape. That being said, it has been sitting on a shelf for about a year and a half without anything connected to the terminals. It is now sitting at 2.993V and is beginning to swell. This is a Lipoly cell, I think. Two other cells from the same pack which have never swollen are not swollen and have been sitting for the same period of time. Clearly what ever caused the other cell to swell, over discharge IIRC, did damage it. I banded my TS cells in 2009 when I installed them. The banding won't keep them from swelling all the time. I've seen cells swell and break the banding but I think that they were grossly overcharged.
