Hi Marina and others,

Thanks for your nice respond. Maybe it's not an easy question at all. That's
why Marina said that it was a very complex subject. However, the more important
it is, the greater ideas we have to talk about it ^_^ There're many Chinese
people in this forum, and I think all of them have their own ideas about these
events because a great event, Olympic Bejing, was hold there in China 3 months
ago. So if you agree with me and want to share something with others, please
give your opinion ^_^

In my opinion, national, regional and international cultural and sporting
events play an increasing role in the world nowadays. In terms of economics,
these events are big opportunities for businesses, particularly service
businesses like restaurants, hotels, shops to boost their revenue. This is very
easy to understand. A big event including a huge number of people has a great
demand for living and entertainment. Thus, service businesses will develop very
rapidly in these areas.

On the other hand, in term of culture, these events are also big chances to
introduce the cultural beauties of the host countries. I was very interested in
watching TV programes discovering China's culture by CNN correspondents in the
time of Olympic Beijing 2008. They were so great. I believe that after the
event, people around the world understand more about Chinese people, China's
cuture, structure and most importantly understand why China is a one of
strongest countries in the world ^_^ I always admire Chinese athletes because
of their skillfulness and their effort.

Although above is only two very small role of big cultural and sporting events,
it indicates that these activities have huge economics and social meaning to
our society.

Looking foward to hearing more of your opinion!

Cheers,
Nam

  Hello Nam,

Wow, you’ve raised a very complex and waste subject. As you say, cultural
and sporting event play a main role in our society. If I focus only in the
World Games, I would like to say that being the host country is a wonderful
economic opportunity. To have more information, please take a look at this link
http://www.worldgames2009.tw/wg2009/eng/index.php

I could talk hours and hours about this subject but my English skills limit a
lot my thoughts. Please, take easier subject.:)

  Have a wonderful weekend,

  Marina

Subject: [ESL Podcast] The role of cultural and sporting events in society?

  Hi all,

Every years, a large number of cultural and sporting events, such as World
Cup or Olympic games, are hold all over the world. They often have a great
attraction to media and public attention. This means that these events play a
meaningful part in our society. Therefore, I want to raise a topic for us to
discuss:

What role do cultural and sporting events play in our society?

Looking forward to hearing your voice.

  Thanks,
  Nam
