I would normally say an PC is the best route (and I would probably still use off lease machines) but I have been playing with a few rpi5's and they are quite amazing. The latency and performance is up there with a normal pc.. It could probably even do decent software step generation. ( I have used software PWM to run amc drives.. ) Coupled with a mesa card - even better. It is a known quantity. The latency is stable and good.
