Index disk came loose and sawed up the opticals, so I put in a hall and glued a screw to the side of the drawbar cap, works fine. But the quad are now coming from an Omron 1000 ppr encoder on the back of the motor. With some hal magic to keep track of the scale according to which gear its in. Sweet!
