My spi cable is maybe 1.25" long and does use the oshpark termination board Jon Elson had made. This was done by turning the pi up side down so theres no twist in the cable and its as short as can be. I transmit at 42 megabits, and receive at 25 megabits. Its on tall standoffs, so there is room for a fan from an old video card under it, blowing on the pi's heat sinks. Rock solid, I just built and installed the .debs for linuxcnc-2.9.0-pre0 (master) on it using a 60 gig ssd plugged into a usb2 adapter as a work drive. You can download those from my web page. A screen shot of it stopped in the middle of running a G76 to cut a 3/8-24 thread was posted yesteraday.
