Hi Peter;

Its two long handles on a pair of shovels hinged together about 15" up
from the tips. Its plunged into the dirt so as to trap some of the dirt
between the shovels. The handles are then pulled apart, causing the
shovels to get a grip on the dirt and its lifted up out of the hole. set
the dirt and shovels aside, close the handles to release the dirt.
Slam/drop it back into the hole and repeat. You can make an 9" diameter
post hole about 30" deep in 10 to 15 minutes if in good shape
physically. You run out of hole diameter to allow the handles to spread
and grip the dirt at about 30" but thats deep enough to plant a 2 or 3
rail treated fencepost. Wash, rinse, repeat for the next post in that
some hole in 12-15 years or so.

I've been here going on 27 years. The first fence was built by a
neighbor at the time & wasn't treated wood, so I went around it and
replaced it with treated stuff about 25 years back, re-did it after
about 14 years, and now just starting on cycle 3. I suspect I'll not
finish cycle 3 as the rest of them are still sitting solid. The 2 I'll
replace if my back will let me, are 2 that took a beating in 2010 when a
110+ mph "direcho" came thru and took down 3 of the remaining pine
trees, about 30 footers. One of them bounced off the fence and wound up
on the next door neighbors carpart roof. That would match up well with
the 2 I'll replace in the next week or so.

We had the only big tree that survived that blow in our front yard, a pin
oak. I helped plant it a year or so before Dee & I said our I do's.
About an 8 footer then, close to 60 now. And over 2 feet thick at the
base. Great summer shade now.
