That seems to be the direction that Machinekit is moving in as the BBB
is a bit weak in the graphics department.
When I last looked (quite a while ago) they were working on making it
easy to run the GUI and realtime on separate hardware.

A lot of 3D printers do the motion-control on an Arduino, so SandyBox
(and Machinekit + BBB) can be seen as an Arduino-upgrade rather than
Full-size Linux  PC alternative.
