They are, made from old 1.75" mine shafting, with lots of swarf on the

Not near as well as right on the motor.  The screws torsional flex will 
tend to let the motor do its own independent dance. Adding a flexible 
coupling between the motor and the screw will probably make the resonance 
worse.  Sometimes lots worse.

All the motors Jeff (xylotex) has are double ended. Some (3) of mine are 
10+ yo now and seem to be plenty good enough to outlast the rest of me.  I 
bought a 3 pack of the 262 oz originally, and have bought 4 more of the 
425's in the last 5 years.  No problems I didn't invent because I didn't 
know what I was doing. :)
