Running with lapping paste should sort that - takes some time though. I've also got some rotary units out of a high end satellite/radar tracking dish - the split pinions are similar to these http://www.hpcgears.com/products/anti_backlash_wormwheels.htm but with springs in slots as in a clutch driven plate. Not sure how they would behave with non linear cutting forces on them though.
