Andy, I wasn't kidden (although I happen to own a bent drill to bore
around the corner in tight spots ;-). I have a (that is, one piece)
5/16" x 18 tpi bolt here from my junk screw box - I'd never throw away a
bolt or srecw. Must be a common thread in imperial country, though. The
threads are 7.8 mm in diam. and it has an inside hex or socket head (we
call it Inbus head over here) with 11 mm OD. Turn the shaft down to 6
mm, so all the threads will be gone, and reduce the head to 10 mm OD.
You can also face it off by two mm to reduce its height. Now, this piece
resembles exactly a 6 mm socket head bolt. The hex key mesasures 7/32",
about 5.6 mm. There is your raw part to cut the threads, and, alas, you
have a metric 6 mm bolt with an imperial 7/32" hex head.
Best regards
Peter
