Hi, I do several test to use USB flashdrive pen instead of harddisk for linuxCNC machine. Today, for mass memory, choice are :
- harddisk - SSD - special kind of SSD, with small capacity (DOM), directly plugable on sata or IDE port. basically, entry price is about the same for the 3 technology... (and way too expensive when you only want 8GB). If you choose compact flash, you need an extra adaptor, and final price is similar. I was not happy at all with all my previous test with USB pen drive, either fast enough but without persistence, or slow as dead ... I finally get a working solution. Simply plug the USB flashdrive, and install LinuxCNC from CDrom, and install it as it is a harddisk. This way make it absolutely usable, if you keep in mind theses points: - do not use swap (so need to use advanced partition edition on installation) - modify the fstab file according to http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Install_To_CompactFlash (do this first, then reboot before applying update if you're connected to internet) the USB key I use are Transcend JetFlash 300 8Gb (for information only) Regards. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Live Security Virtual Conference Exclusive live event will cover all the ways today's security and threat landscape has changed and how IT managers can respond.
