Most bits themselves aren't much better than that. Measuring the collet at its internal taper, I get only the needle wobbles from the surface roughness, much less than a thou. Maybe I got lucky, but mine is plenty precise as is unless one wants calibrated, repeatable lengths when changing cutters. I think even that could be achieved by consistently bottoming the bit shank in the chuck and grinding the end of the shank on the longer ones to match.
